API Publications and Writer Guidelines

Attachment Parenting International promotes parenting practices that create strong, healthy emotional bonds between children and their parents. Through education, support, advocacy and research, our principal goal is to heighten global awareness of the profound significance of secure attachment—not only to invest in our children’s bright futures, but to reduce and ultimately prevent emotional and physical mistreatment of children, addiction, crime, behavioral disorders, mental illness and other outcomes of early unhealthy attachment.

For more than 20 years, API has been an important source of parenting education and support to parents, professionals, researchers and the media. Contributing to API is an opportunity to offer your support and knowledge, participate in a movement of cultural change and advocate for Attachment Parenting and families, build your portfolio as a writer, receive feedback and encouragement in your writing, express your observations, feelings and experiences as a parent, help us build the body of knowledge on Attachment Parenting and contribute as a volunteer to a valued organization.

API’s platform of publications is strong and our community continues to grow and impact our world. API’s publications are trusted resources, dedicated to advancing our collective mission.

API invites your original, unpublished work that serves API’s community of families, media, professionals and others seeking to learn more about Attachment Parenting. API may seek reprint permission to publish certain articles; however, this practice is limited and is by invitation only.

Articles can be on any topic related to API’s Eight Principles of Parenting. Some topics are more popular among API’s community or are topics that our editors have identified as important to expand API’s resources. You may be interested in submitting on one of these topics, and we invite you to contact our editors for needed topics specific to their publications.

Articles are accepted on a continual basis and each article goes through a structured editorial review process for content and clarity. Due to the high volume of submissions, API’s desire to nurture a diverse community of expression, and our preference on occasion to designate particular articles for observances or series, accepted articles may not be published immediately and are scheduled at the discretion of the editor.

  • Attached Family print magazine is looking for interviews, journalistic features and how-to’s but will also publish unique perspectives from parents. Accepted journalistic features explore topics in-depth and include references. Word count is 1500 to 2500 for journalistic features. Word count for other types of submissions are generally 1000 or less, although interviews may be any length. Contact the editor, Rita Brhel, for more information.
  • APtly Said blog is looking for personal stories from parents about their everyday Attachment Parenting journeys. Word count is 300 to 600. Contact the interim editor, Rita Brhel, for more information.

API does not allow links to external websites within articles, with rare exceptions made at the discretion of the editor, unless links are to API resources. The author byline may include one link to an approved external website, at the discretion of the editor.

In the case of an article accepted for publication by API, the contributor agrees that the article is original and exclusively for API publication. Reprint opportunities of author articles, with credits to API and the relevant API publication, will be promoted and encouraged by API from the point of publication date. Reprints of any work published by API must follow API’s reprints and permissions policy and must not be used for any financial gain.

API may use accepted articles in one or multiple of our publications or products, at or near the time of original publication or at future dates.

Since API provides its publications as a service to all families free of charge, we do not financially compensate authors for articles. However, each post or article gets widespread exposure through API resources, partners and social networks and furthers the mission of serving all parents in raising compassionate, connected children.
