i recently met a friend from Japan. She made a comment that makes me think about the differences in our cultures and upbringing of children. She said "he'll be your master for few more years", refering to my son (12months). To her, being a mother means giving the baby all of myself, and that's the way mothering IS in Japan. We live in Canada, western culture, which has a relatively different perspective on mothering norm. We practice AP, so we often feel out of place when people commented on how we should let our son "learn" to be independent.

I guess in short... mothering in Japan is re-adjusting your life and find a new equilibrium around your baby. Whereas here, we often want the baby to fit in our lifes. How different indeed.

Excellent post! Patience is something that can help you not only with your kids but also with everyone in your life.

I think one simple reason we may find ourselves losing patience is because of lack of sleep or general exhaustion. It is important to take care of yourself by eating healthy, including a short workout and getting enough sleep each day.

Patience certainly is a virture, but it comes only if you are surrounded by positive energy in your life. Only then can you give positive energy in the form of love to others.

Good luck

Yes! PATIENCE. I have a quick temper and not a lot of patience. This is my number one parenting goal for 2009, to be more patient with my 4 year old. It's really hard for me when he has to be told to stop bothering the cat 12000 times before he gets it. Reminding myself that he's only 4 has really helped a lot.
